Intensive Therapy for Trauma & PTSD

What is Intensive Therapy for Trauma and PTSD?

If you’re struggling with PTSD or trauma, you may be familiar with traditional therapy—weekly 50-to-90-minute sessions spread over several months. Intensive therapy offers an alternative by condensing treatment into a shorter time frame, often over several consecutive days, so you can experience progress more quickly.

During intensive trauma therapy, you work one-on-one with me for a pre-arranged period, allowing for deeper, focused healing without long gaps between sessions. This approach is often conducted online via secure video conferencing, so you can access therapy from the comfort of your home or office. In-person sessions are also available upon request.

How Does Intensive Therapy Work?

Intensive therapy follows NICE-recommended approaches such as:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – Allows the brain to reprocess traumatic memories
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – exposure to trauma memories helps to promote habituation.
  • Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) – Assists in organising traumatic experiences into a structured life narrative.

These evidence-based therapies are delivered at a higher frequency than traditional weekly sessions. Although this condensed model is relatively new in the UK, it is well-researched and widely used in the USA, the Netherlands, and Norway. Studies show that intensive therapy is just as effective as weekly therapy for PTSD.

What to Expect from Intensive Trauma Therapy

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all program. Your therapy is tailored to your unique needs, experiences, and goals. Here’s what the process looks like:

  • Two 90-minute assessment sessions – I will explore how trauma affects you today, your coping strategies, and what you want to realistically achieve in the intensive therapy sessions.
  • Personalised treatment planning – Your sessions will be structured around your specific difficulties and goals.
  • Guided trauma processing – Using proven therapeutic methods to help you heal in a safe, supportive environment.

Since intensive therapy is a focused commitment, I will also ensure it’s the right fit for you before starting. You’ll have plenty of time to ask questions and discuss any concerns during the assessment phase.

Why Choose Intensive Therapy for PTSD?

Many people prefer intensive trauma therapy because it offers:

  • Faster results – What might take months in traditional therapy can be achieved in just a few days.
  • Cost-effectiveness – When compared to months of therapy and potential lost work time, intensive therapy can be a more affordable option.
  • A dedicated healing space – With ring-fenced time, you can focus solely on your recovery without weekly interruptions.
  • Flexibility – Sessions can be scheduled around medical appointments, school runs, or work commitments.
  • Minimal disruption – Online therapy allows you to attend sessions from the comfort of your home or office.

You’re also encouraged to incorporate gentle physical activity (such as walking or light exercise) between sessions, as research suggests this can enhance the effectiveness of trauma therapy.

Can Intensive Therapy Complement My Current Therapy?

Yes! If you’re already working with a therapist or counsellor on other aspects of your life, intensive therapy for PTSD can complement your existing treatment. It provides a focused, structured approach to trauma work while allowing you to continue other forms of support.
