Healing from Trauma
What is Trauma? Understanding Its Impact on Your Well-Being
Trauma is more than just a painful memory—it’s a deep emotional, psychological, and even physical response to an overwhelming experience. It can leave lasting effects on your mental health, behaviour, and overall sense of well-being.
You might have experienced trauma if you’ve been through:
- A serious accident or injury
- A natural disaster
- Violence, war, or unexpected crises
- A difficult or abusive relationship
- Any experience that made you feel unsafe, powerless, or deeply shaken
Trauma affects everyone differently. Some people experience anxiety, emotional numbness, or flashbacks, while others struggle with trust, relationships, or feeling disconnected from themselves. No matter how it shows up for you, your experience is valid, and healing is possible.
You don’t have to go through this alone. Trauma therapy can help you process what happened, regain control, and feel like yourself again. If you’re ready to take that step, I’m here to support you.
A Compassionate Approach to Trauma Therapy
Healing from trauma isn’t just about revisiting painful memories—it’s about reclaiming your sense of self, building inner resources, and feeling safe again. My approach to trauma therapy is rooted in authenticity, empathy, and collaboration. Together, we’ll create a safe space where you can process what’s happened, understand your triggers, and develop tools to manage overwhelming emotions.
You’ll also gain insight into how trauma affects the brain and body—why certain experiences still feel so intense and how we can work through them. Healing is not about “just moving on”—it’s about reconnecting with yourself in a way that feels empowering and true to who you are.
Why Trauma Therapy Feels Different from Traditional Counselling
Trauma therapy is often more structured and focused than traditional talk therapy. Many trauma survivors experience intense emotions and body sensations when revisiting the past, so this approach helps create safety, stability, and control throughout the process.
Instead of revisiting painful memories without direction, we’ll use evidence-based trauma treatments that support you in a way that feels manageable and safe. Think of it as a step-by-step guide to healing—where you’re in control, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.
A Three-Phase Approach to Trauma Therapy
I use a structured yet flexible three-phase model that supports those with PTSD, Complex PTSD, or lived experiences of complex trauma. Each phase is designed to meet you where you are in your healing journey.
Phase 1: Safety & Stabilisation
Before we dive into trauma processing, we build a foundation of safety. This phase includes:
Understanding how trauma impacts the brain & body (so you know you are not going mad)
Practical tools to manage triggers, flashbacks, and overwhelming emotions.
Grounding techniques & coping strategies to create a sense of control.
Phase 2: Trauma Processing & Healing
Once you both feel you are ready, we begin processing trauma selecting from a range of evidence-based techniques that meet your requirements, such as:
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) to reprocess painful memories.
- Exposure therapies like Narrative and Prolonged Exposure to promote habituation.
- Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to shift trauma-related thought patterns.
- Imagery and Rescripting therapies to decrease emotional impact of memories.
- Parts Work to heal fragmented parts of yourself.
Every step of the way, you’ll be fully supported and in control of your healing process.
There is more information about the individual therapies I offer on the ‘The Therapies‘ page.
Phase 3: Integration & Moving Forward
This final phase focuses on:
- Letting go of trauma-related beliefs & behaviours that no longer serve you.
- Fostering post-traumatic growth – Helping you reconnect with your authentic self, who you have always been, rediscovering parts of yourself that may feel lost, unheard or broken.
- Rebuilding confidence, trust, and connection with yourself & others.
