Trauma Therapies

Here are some of the therapies I offer at A.I.M Trauma Therapy. I specialise in a range of evidence-based trauma therapies designed to support you on your healing journey. Whether you’re dealing with PTSD, complex trauma, anxiety, or distressing memories, I tailor therapy to your unique experiences, needs, and goals.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

For full details on EMDR therapy, please visit my [EMDR Therapy page] and [Intensive EMDR Therapy page].

Imagery Rescripting Therapies

Helping You Heal from Childhood Trauma & Mistaken Beliefs

I use several imagery rescripting therapies which are powerful tools for those who have experienced physical, sexual, psychological abuse or neglect in childhood. These therapies help to reframe distressing memories and reduce negative emotions such as:

  • Anger, blame, grief, guilt, and shame
  • Self-limiting beliefs formed due to past trauma
  • Unresolved emotional pain from childhood experiences

How it works:
In therapy, you are guided to revisit a traumatic memory in a safe, structured way. This helps to process the trauma both emotionally and cognitively, allowing you to gain control over the memory rather than it controlling you.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PET)

Overcoming Fear & Avoidance from Trauma

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PET) is a structured approach for individuals who have experienced a single-event trauma (Type 1 Trauma), PTSD, or trauma-related anxiety and depression.

How it works:

  • Helps you emotionally process traumatic memories.
  • Uses gradual, controlled exposure to reduce distress.
  •  Focuses on breathing techniques & relaxation strategies.

Research shows that prolonged exposure therapy effectively rewires the brain to understand that the trauma is a past event, not a present danger.

Written Exposure Therapy (WET)

Healing Through Guided Writing

Written Exposure Therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach designed to help individuals process and cope with traumatic memories by writing about them in a controlled and structured way.

  • No homework required – all writing is done within the therapy session.
  • Helps reduce PTSD symptoms, anxiety, and emotional distress.
  • Encourages you to express and process difficult emotions safely.

By putting your experiences into words, you can reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, allowing for deep healing and transformation.

Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)

Rewriting Your Life Story in a Healing Way

Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) helps trauma survivors create a chronological life story, integrating traumatic memories into a coherent, structured narrative.

How it works:

  • You construct your “life-line”, marking positive and traumatic events.
  • Therapy helps reprocess and organise these experiences.
  • The goal is to heal fragmented memories and create a sense of closure.

This therapy is especially effective for individuals who have experienced multiple traumatic events and need a structured way to make sense of their past.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Reframing Trauma to Find Emotional Freedom

CPT is a cognitive-based therapy designed to help individuals reprocess and reinterpret trauma-related beliefs.

  • Helps change negative thought patterns about self, others, and the world.
  • Encourages emotional processing in a structured, supportive environment.
  • Works to diminish guilt, shame, and overgeneralization of trauma.

This therapy is ideal for individuals who struggle with persistent negative thoughts about their traumatic experiences.

Additional Trauma Therapy Techniques

Emotional & Interpersonal Regulation

A 10-week structured program designed to help individuals with:

  • Emotional regulation challenges
  • Building coping skills for distress & negative emotion
  • Developing healthier relationship patterns
  • Learning interpersonal skills to improve communication & boundaries

This program prepares individuals for deeper trauma work, providing a solid foundation for processing difficult memories.

Addressing Trauma-Related Nightmares

If post-traumatic nightmares are impacting your sleep, I may recommend Exposure, Relaxation, and Rescripting Therapy (ERRT).

  • Helps identify what’s disrupting your sleep.
  • Uses rescripting techniques to reduce nightmare frequency.
  • Works to promote more restful, undisturbed sleep.

Rewind Technique for PTSD & Phobias

Developed by David Muss, the Rewind Technique is designed to help individuals with PTSD and phobias by allowing them to:

  • Observe traumatic memories from a detached perspective.
  • Use visualisation techniques to reduce emotional distress.
  • Reprocess trauma

Advanced Flash Technique (FT)

A gentle, EMDR-adjacent technique developed by Dr. Philip Manfield to reduce the distress associated with traumatic memories.

  • Allows processing of trauma without intense emotional activation.
  • Can be a precursor to EMDR for those needing a gentler approach.
  • Helps individuals reduce trauma symptoms quickly.
